Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is there a contract?

We are month to month, meaning the swimmer can start or stop lessons at any time.  There is no contract between the client and the Australian Swim School.  We do not issue refunds for lessons that have already been paid for, but we can provide a credit on the client’s swim account to use if they wish to come back after unexpected breaks.

  • How quickly will my child learn to swim?

Parents often think there's a universal timeline for children to learn to swim, but this isn't accurate. Just as kids learn to walk at different times, their swimming abilities also develop at their own pace. Once lessons begin, parents can gauge their child's progress and understand their individual rate of improvement. Our dedicated instructors work to help each child advance efficiently while maintaining our curriculum standards. Every child's development is unique, influenced by factors like age, lesson frequency and consistency, comprehension, motor skills, cognitive development, and multitasking ability. After each lesson, the deck supervisor is available to discuss your child's current focus skills and the goals needed to move them to the next level.

  • How long is each swim lessons?

Majority of our learn to swim classes are 30 min classes in our heated, indoor year-round swimming pool.

Our top level, squads is an hour long class.

Our adaptive classes are 1:1, starting at 15 minute lessons with the option to add additional 15 minutes at an additional cost.

Our private classes are 20 min.

  • When does your session start?

We do not run in sessions.  Our school is an on-going, year round program so that clients can begin and end lessons at any time.  We will automatically transfer each student to the following month unless the parent has notified us by the 25th of the month prior.

If you start mid-month tuition will be prorated. You will only pay for the remaining classes in the month.

  • Do you offer a trial class?

Yes - All new clients are entitled to one free trial class. We use this as an assement of your childs swim skills, as well as allow you to ensure our program is the right for you.

  • Are private lessons better than group lessons?

There are instances where private lessons are recommended.  We do NOT recommend privates for the beginner children.  Children learn from one another.  They feed off or mimic each other and therefore do better in a group setting.  A very fearful child that is not functioning in a group may benefit from private lessons.  An adult or teen that is interested in attaining a specific goal could be recommended for privates.

  • How can instructor manage multiple students safely?

There is a platform in the pool that the students can stand on/hold onto. Also our teachers are trained to always have eyes on their class and to ensure they never turn their back to their students.

  • Today is my first day, what can I expect?

Upon arrival, our office staff will greet you, assign your designated color/station, and give you a tour of our facility. We use the first class as an assessment, allowing us to place your swimmer in the correct level. Classes start promptly, so please ensure your child is seated on the wall ready to meet their instructor.

  • What if my child gets upset?

It is not unusual for a child to be nervous or crying on the first day. Worst case your child could cry up to 4 lessons, the instructor will not push the child to do anything they dont want to do. For example a submersion. But it is important the child is in the pool, on platform/pool floor or stairs. The parent is recommended to remain in their seat around the pool. We recommend the parent to have calm body language and smile and remind their child its ok. We do not recommend the parent sit or stand over edge of the pool as the child will think the parent will take them out. It can be a scary situation but never traumatic. This is just a recommendation, do what makes you comfortable.

  • What should I bring?

For our parent and me class, you will want to have a bathing suit for baby, appropriate bathing suit for parent

  • Does my child need to wear diapers?

Any student in the PME class needs to wear a reusable swim diaper. After that, if the child is potty trained it is not enforced. We do sell swim diapers here at the school or you can buy them at Target, Walmart, or online.  This policy is in place for the safety and hygiene of all of our clients.

  • Are caps and goggles required?

It is not necessary to wear caps or goggles. Some swimmers will prefer to wear a cap to keep their hair out of their face.  Goggles are good to use as a teaching aid as it can help to keep swimmer relaxed as their learning.  We do advise however, that beginner students do not use goggles since many swimmers can become dependent on goggles and not swim without them.

  • Where can I change my child or myself?

Each facility is set up a little differently.  For most of the facilities, there are changing facilities located at the pool area.  There are also baby changing stations available making it easy to dress your little one. Speak to the manager for the specific changing facilities available at your school.

  • Can we use the pool outside of designated lesson times to practice?

The pool may only be used for scheduled lessons.  Clients may not be in the pool before or after their scheduled lesson. This is due to liability and safety issues.

  • Should my child wear earplugs?

Ear plugs are a personal choice.  If they are not molded to the ear, they can fall out while swimming.  When an ear plug is pushed back into the ear, they can hold moisture in the ear and do more harm than good.  The most common types of ear infections are middle/inner ear infections and these can not be caused by water. Children who commonly have ear infections get them when they are sick with a cold while some children will never have an ear infection.  It is based on the individual child and their ear anatomy.  We recommend to parents that it is a good idea to thoroughly towel dry your child’s hair and dress them appropriately in the winter months to avoid sickness.
